Lighting increase the detail of the fish tank and gives an edge to the decor more noticeable. Pet fishes are kept in a place with low intensity and subdued lighting effects that is why lighting is more important so as to make fish /pets more comfortable. Lighting in aquarium is more important as plants and pets depend upon it. If lighting is not proper the plants will not grow instead it increases the growth of algae.

Lighting is important for fish-only aquarium as fish needs 10-12 hours of light in a day; they need it so as to know where they are swimming, what they are eating. One should keep in mind that lights in aquarium should not be shut suddenly as fishes might get scared. Now day’s aquarium lighting timers are available which can be placed in aquariums to solve the issue. Often lighting in aquarium is neglected. Either too much of lighting is installed or too little of lighting is there; in both the cases it would not prove healthy for fishes. Proper lighting keeps the fish healthy in number of ways.

Keeping the aquarium near windows or at a place where too much exposures of sun light is there is also not good as it increases the water temperature to dangerous levels and allows algae to propagate.

Fluorescent lighting is helpful for fishes where as candescent lighting produces lots of heat and raises the water temperature which in a way is harmful for the fish. Aquarium light should provide 3W of lighting with every gallon of water in the aquarium.

One should change the lights every 8 months so as to maintain the uniformity of light altitude. Aquariums with plants have different lighting requirements. One should set up a tri-phosphor tube or full spectrum fluorescent bulb to provide the plants with the full spectrum of light they necessitate to nurture.

There are different arrangements of the light bulbs or tubes in a salt water aquarium and the designing of the hood should be made such that can be used both for salt water aquarium lighting and fresh water aquarium lighting. In salt water tank double tubes or bulbs are more appropriate

Thus one should give importance to lighting aspect while buying the aquarium or designing the decor for it.
