How to handle pet problems with Fleas/Ticks/Petstain/Odours/Teeth

1. FLEAS: **When we examine closely we find small black insects moving
rapidly on dog's coat. If we see small black smacks, it's all nothing but
flea dirt or actually flea faeces.

Dogs show some slight scratching to severe reaction to flea bite and flea
saliva. Fleas are found on necks,ear,thighs and base of tail. In extreme
case dogs' skin start to scale and discolour. Hair loss and secondary
bacterial infection too occur.

Always treat dogs for flea on same day. We should not treat the pet only but
also treat the home environment. Regular hoovering and cleaning of beddings
will also help to destroy flea's different life stages.
**

2. TICKS: **These are small grey rounded insects which suck blood of the
pet. When engorged appear to be the size of the pea/gram. Mostly found on
ear/face/abdomen where hair cover is relatively thin.Peak activity of tick
is between March-June and August-November. Ticks life cycle is spent outside
in long grasslands and they also survive in cracks and crevices in walls and
floors.
**

**IDENTIFICATION: Adult ticks resemble small, smooth wart or blood blister
seen attached to skin. Skin get irritated due to allergic reaction of bite.
Heavy infestation lead to anaemia.

CONTROL: While removing ticks from body, always remove mouth parts from the
skin as it may result in irritation. One can also use insecticides like
liquid antitick shampoos, Ivermectin salt, Cypermethrin &Amitras which kill
ticks.
**

3. PETSTAIN AND ODOUR: **Petstain particularly of urine and faeces has a
peculiar smell which stimulate the pet to repeat the activity at same place
and some stains are not easy to remove. To get rid of petstain and odour we
need the following:

**1. **Baking soda/ white vinegar/ dish washing detergent/ 3% H2O2 (Hydrogen
Peroxide)

**a. **Absorb urine with towel or paper towel as much as possible by
repeating and changing towels.

**b. **wet the area with 50% white vinegar + 50% water. Allow to rinse and
then dry by using blotting paper towel. (As vinegar neutralises Ammonia in
urine)

**c. **Apply baking soda on area and dizzle it with 1/4 cup of 3% H2O2 mixed
with 1 tea spoon full of dish washing detergent. Scrub it and allow it to
dry and then vaccum it.

H2O2 - kills bacteria which causes urine and faeces to smell.

Baking soda- works as deodorizer

But while using H2O2 take care that it does not discolour your carpet/ cloth
etc.
**

4. TEETH: **Teeth are very important part of the body. It is all due to
their canine teeth, they are known as Canine. just like human beings, teeth
of pets also get decayed and has deposit of tartar etc. with the passage of
time, if we don't care for it. It is all especially due to their sharp teeth
, man fears. Without teeth in mouth, it will be wise to say that barking
dogs never bite. So it is our utmost duty to ensure proper care of teeth of
pets. For this we should promote our pet as per recommendations of VET. for
brushing . While brushing always use pet's brush and pet's tooth paste.
Before starting brushing always consult your VET. about any gum disease or
damaged teeth and otherwise process of brushing will be painful and pet will
associate pain with brushing and even may bite. So it will be better to
place pet on a comfortable surface before brushing and give him proper
training as well.
